Anti
Spam from Headweb
'Spam'
is junk e-mail, often pornographic, usually trying to sell
you something you don't wan't or direct you to
websites often of the unsavoury variety. Spam clogs up our
servers and causes you to spend valuable time downloading and sifting
through for genuine mail. Today the cost of this to individuals
and businesses has become unacceptable. For this reason we have
installed Anti Spam software and basic Anti Virus software on our
server. All 'headweb.co.uk' email accounts are now protected and
we can extend this service to any domain on the server.
Official
definition: Unsolicited e-mail, often
of a commercial nature, sent indiscrminately to multiple mailing
lists, individuals, or newsgroups.
How
it Works
The software scans the header and body of every email passing through
the headweb server before awarding it a number of "points".
The points are based on common factors known to exist in spam emails
(eg certain words, and email coming from certain sources).
- Anything
below 5 points is considered "not spam", allowing it
to pass through to your email box.
-
Messages with 5-15 points will have ***Spam*** in their subject
line but will be passed through to your mail box.
-
Messages with 15 points and over will be automatically deleted
and will not be delivered.
NB
- No system is perfect but this FREE service goes a long way to
reducing this menace. We will soon be launching a service that you
can tailor to your own needs but this will cost on a 'per mailbox'
basis.
Requesting
it for your domain
You can request it by filling in the form
here.
How
you can use it:
If you have an email client such as Outlook Express, Outlook or
Eudora you can configure the mail rules to perform certain functions
(e.g. do not download from the server, delete or put in 'xx' folder).
TIP:
Most users elect to set 'Message Rules' (in outlook express) to leave
messages with ***SPAM*** in the subject line on the server. They then
periodically check with 'Webmail'
before deleting them. This saves the on-line time spent downloading
them and reduces the possibility of users (eg children or others)
being offended or upset by the contents. To learn how to do this in
Outlook Express - click
here.
For
other email clients such as Outlook, Eudora etc the process may
be similar to above, however, we suggest you use the "help"
function in the program and search for "Message rules"
or similar.
